A Road Less Traveled

Diamond Creek

  • Access via Buck and Doe Road (Hualapai Reservation) or Antares Road to Peach Springs.
  • Requires a permit from Hualapai Fish and Game to reach the Colorado River on the South side—21 miles from the reservation.

Music Mountain Mines & Hell’s Canyon

  • Off Antares Road, explore mines like Ellen Jane, Rosebud, Lucky Cuss, Bonanza King.
  • Hell’s Canyon ends on Hualapai reservation land—steep, rugged terrain.

Grand Canyon Caverns

  • Drive 10 miles east of Peach Springs via Antares Road (unpaved) or Paved Route 66 from Kingman.
  • Largest dry cave in the U.S., 95 miles from Meadview.
  • An elevator drops 210 feet into the cavern, which is a rare dry cavern—only 3% worldwide.
  • Fee area.

Hualapai Mountain Park

  • Elevation: 8,300 ft, located in a pine forest with saguaro on the lower southern end.
  • Many historic mines to explore.
  • Features the Gold King Mansion on the eastern slope.

Goldroad / Oatman

  • 100 miles from Meadview through Kingman via old Route 66.
  • Historic boomtown with active gold mines.
  • Crosses the volcanic Black Mountains; visit the honeymoon spot of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard..

Brechner Stone Cabin & Temple Bar via Back Road

  • From Pearce Ferry Rd, turn onto Gregg’s Hideout Road to Brechner’s Cabin (1859).
  • Temple Bar can be reached via dirt roads from Bluebird Canyon or Pearce Ferry Road; offers mines and views of Lake Mead.

Grapevine Wash & Surrounding Trails

  • Located east on Meadview Blvd., follow BLM 145 into Wash.
  • Visit Anasazi Yucca Roasting Pits, Dry Falls, Gypsum Cliffs, Pearce Ferry Landing, and remnants of old mining sites.
  • Historically used as the Old Ute Trail by the Anasazi.

Pope Mine & Chalcedony Wash

  • Turn left at milepost 25 on Highway 93.
  • Follow dirt roads to the mine and Chalcedony deposits.
  • Guide recommended.

Secret Pass & Hidden Arch

  • From Highway 68, turn onto Estrella Road.
  • Secret Pass is a challenging hike with historic significance; Hidden Arch is located in rocky formations above the parking area.
  • Guide recommended.

Cyclopic, Fry, & Owens Mines

  • Off Pearce Ferry at mile 16, into low hills—active mines, some in production.

Pataya Road

  • Connects near Music Mountain Road, crossing Red Lake—an old Indian route now used for recreation.

  • Turn at milepost 51 off Highway 93.
  • Scenic picnic spot with a trail up Cherum Peak (6,800 ft).

  • Near Diamond Bar Ranch—hiking recommended for views of Red Lake and garnet deposits.

Fig Springs

  • On the old Gold Road, 11 miles beyond McConnico.
  • Features springs, marsh, rock houses, and a historic fig tree planted in 1776 by Friar Garces.
