1. Figure out How Long You Visit For

Is it possible to do the West Rim Grand Canyon in a day? YES. Is it recommended? Meh!

While it’s possible to explore the West Rim in a day, it’s a very VERY long day—about four hours round trip from Las Vegas (major city which most come from), not including time in bussing in the park. Most of that day will be spent in transit, so if you’re limited on time, plan for an early start and a full day.

Simply said majority of the day you will be in the car. Ideally, you'd want to make it at least a 2-3 day trip. Whether you book with The Wild Donkey or not we genuinely love the area and recommend it as an unrushed, weekend getaway. Note there are NO hotels in Meadview, the two options are on the Indian Reservation or in the closest town: Meadview, Arizona. If you are staying overnight, make sure your accommodations are confirmed and aligned with the day you are entering in the park.

2. Nail Down What You Want to Do

Depending on your time limits you won't be able to do everything

The West Rim offers a variety of experiences: walking on the Skywalk, scenic viewpoints, hiking, historical walks, helicopter tours, rafting trips on the Colorado River and more. Determine your top priorities and consider your budget.

Does all these offerings feel like a tourist trap/amusement park? YES. Does it have to be? NO.

Visiting the West Rim of the Grand Canyon and doing the skywalk is ENOUGH and truly an unforgettable experience, every rim of the Grand Canyon is a MUST SEE. However, rafting & a helicopter tour? Our wallet says no thank you. If you do have the money to do it all, go for it! Rafting on the Colorado is also a once-in-a-lifetime experience but don't feel like you're missing too much if it's not the right time in your life.

3. Organize Your Transportation and Tickets

Ready to go?

Since the area is more remote, it’s essential to plan your transportation. If you’re going self-drive, ensure your vehicle is in good condition, and plan your fuel stops accordingly. There are so many rental places in Las Vegas if that is where you are coming from and you aren't locked down to what the run-of-the-mill tours offer.

Advance ticket purchase is a must, YOU CANNOT GET INTO THE WEST RIM WITHOUT A DAY PASS. IF YOU HAVE A NPS (National Park Pass) IT WILL NOT WORK. Look for combo packages to maximize your experience and save money. Also, stay updated on weather conditions and park alerts to prepare for your visit and ensure safety.
